Mobile iPhone Streets NYC

A Tool That Helps Me Tell a Story

Whether you classify yourself as a street photographer or not, we’ve all participated in the genre and never have I felt more like a declared street photographer than when I’m shooting with the iPhone.

The device is highly identifiable but what you’re doing with it is not always apparent simply because the options of what you can be accomplishing are practically endless seeing that there’s an app for everything. That works in our favor because you can essentially get away with photographing subjects under circumstances that wouldn’t be as easy using a dSLR.

Prime example of how I feel utilizing the iPhone “as a tool that helps me tell the story I wanna tell” is this Blurb video of Emmy award-winning and multimedia journalist Richard Koci Hernandez. He talks about his passionate iPhone-agraphy tactics and how mobile photography appeals to those who are captivated by the act of instantly shooting and sharing. His observation in that no one pays attention to you if you wear headphones is spot on. 95% of the photos I’ve secretively shot using Camera+ have been taken this same way.

This past week my Instagram feed had more activity than usual because I was commuting to Manhattan everyday via subway to undergo training for a position I took on with a new company. My general work commute has always constituted driving, so the change of scenery of traveling into a city that’s practically begging to be photographed was thrilling.

Through Extended Highways

My best experiences with highways have been when time on them is kept to a minimum. I respect the enthusiasm for people to want to discover amazing glimpses of forgotten highways in the middle of nowhere during road-trips but the thought of being in a car for an extended amount of time is torture for me.

From New York, we’ve driven to both Boston and Washington and each trip has averaged a total of 5 hours which I’ve concluded is the longest I would tolerate being in a car. I prefer to spend more time enjoying the destination and less of the journey yet I’m fond of both when the trip involves taking a plane. Photographing is what kept me sane after the music got dull and the snacks started running out.

World Unisphere at Flushing Meadow

Flushing Meadows Park is one of the largest parks in NYC at 1,255 acres which means there’s always plenty of room to find a quiet spot and relax. For the most part it’s well maintained throughout the year but it’s appearance is highly rejuvenated towards the end of the summer when the US Open is underway.

We live 15 minutes away from the park and the reason I ever set foot inside is to bike ride. If lugging your bike is not option, you can always rent one for $10/hr. My wife and I prefer to ride on the weekends because that’s when you’ll see Hispanic food trucks serving delicious steak, beans, rice and salad combo for $9.

In case this World Unisphere looks familiar it’s because it it stands in the center of the park and you’ve probably seen it in Will Smith’s earlier films - Men in Black. I’ve began relying more on the iPhone 4 as the only camera to carry during random outings.

Airplane
Serenity in the Sky

The airplane-taking portion of any trip is the least of my anticipations when traveling. I don’t have a phobia towards flying itself but more of a distaste to the boredom that characterizes being in a small confine space for hours.

Normally decent food and a killer movie makes up for that dullness but if those two amenities fail, I always have my laptop and snuck-in-food to compensate for expectations that I know are never going to be met. Any experience on an airplane is not what it use to be. Soon we’ll be charged for going to the restroom and if they ever do, I’ll still won’t hesitate in using my camera to photograph beautiful tranquil moments like this.

Gazing at this strongly accentuates my never ending fascination with continuing to fly in years to come and capturing moments to better remember each location. Photograph taken with the iPhone 4.
