Thoughts Style Artist

Defining Your Style & Delivery

Tuesday nights are uneventful as far as entertainment for me. There’s nothing notable on TV, so I’ve opted to watch American Idol lately and while there’s no particular artist that stands out yet, there’s a common theme which has intrigued me more than the performances and that’s this whole aspect of finding yourself.

Out of thousands of contestants, none of the current 24 finalist would have made it this far if they didn’t have the vocals, the charisma and natural born eagerness to want to be a singer. That’s already a given but what isn’t obvious is seeing who each of the contestants are artistically. At the moment, they seem to be singing songs just because that’s what the show is about but there’s nothing unique about how they do it.

Regardless of what type of artist you are, personal style is essential if you want to succeed and avoid just being “another performer” or “another” of anything. The contestants are repeatedly criticized for poor song choices which stems from them not knowing yet who they are as an artist which I understand because developing yourself on the show is part of the process.

Every week will be dedicated to a different genre of music and when they perform, it’s not so much about whether it sounded good but more reliant on how they were able to personalize something that wasn’t theirs to begin with.

I think we all have heroes and we often aspire perhaps too much to sing, draw, photograph or to do anything like them but that’s not how things work. If you’re serious about wanting to do more with your music or photography or anything, I would assume you should easily be able to respond to the question of what specific type of work you genuinely want to create.

It’s not enough to say you just want to take pictures or that you want to be on stage. What’s the point of being on a high-rise platform if you’re not sure want you want to deliver from it?

The ideal case would be finding your personal style, spend days, week or years polishing your craft so well to a point where there will be no one who can possibly create art the way you will. No one else but you and that’s a comforting thought.

You can’t force yourself into working in a certain way. It has to come natural to you and in return, what you yield will be as high caliber as your delivery. As unconventional as Lady Gaga may seem, she more than anyone knows who she is. Her style defines her and her music classifies her at being the best in her craft.
